Non-Surgical Approach

Non-Surgical Approach

New advances in sports medicine have made it possible for certain injuries to be treated with non-surgical techniques. A non-surgical approach enables patients return to their regular activities faster by avoiding the downtime associated with surgery. In cases where surgery is the only or best option, Dr. Mahooti  and Dr. Mulroy will facilitate a consultation with an orthopedic surgical specialist.

The following injuries may be treated without surgery:

Achilles tendon ruptures
  • Achilles tendon ruptures are often treated surgically, but studies have shown that patients with complete Achilles ruptures who undergo a dynamic functional rehabilitation program have equivalent outcomes to patients who undergo surgical repair, and they avoid the risk of surgical complications.
Rotator cuff tears
  • Rotator cuff tears are not always the cause of shoulder pain. Several non-surgical options are available to treat this injury.
Anterior Cruciate Ligament (“ACL:”) ruptures
  • Many recreational athletes who suffer ACL ruptures can be effectively treated non-surgically with a diligent rehabilitation program and a period of activity modification. Dr. Mahooti generally recommends a non-surgical approach in patients over 40, and often for younger patients who engage in mild to moderate sports and activities that don’t require cutting or pivoting.
